If You Build It…

During a beach walk last month, I spotted something mysterious around the next bend. Clambering over rocks while eyeing the encroaching surf, I made it around the corner to find an incredible, unexpected structure tucked into a small cove, nestled against the high cliffs above. I felt as if I’d stumbled onto a set for a Star Wars film.

A Google search revealed the origins of this strange construction: The Bell Pavilion, nicknamed the Mushroom House by locals, was designed and built by Dale Naegle in 1965 for Sam Bell of Bell’s Potato Chips and General Mills. Intended as a guest house for the main house on top of the bluff, the structure was accessed by a tram that ran along the cliffs rising 300 feet above the isolated beach. Bell sought a structure capable of withstanding the elements, and Naegle created something unique and compelling.

An external wall was added after the original construction as extra protection against the sea and surf. Currently out of use, but still private property, the house also has been marked with graffiti — vandalized? Or has someone else layered their own artistic vision upon the original?

Happening upon something so bold and unexpected was truly inspiring. My takeaway? Be true to your imagination and vision, and create something unique and groundbreaking that will inspire others in turn.
