With Longevity and Vision, Kusama Inspires
Now in her 90s, Yayoi Kusama is still creating art. Her infinity mirror rooms are feats of engineering and imagination. Using mirrored walls, floor and ceiling, she turns a half circle resting on the floor, or a quarter circle in the corner of the room, into an endless row of complete circles, overlapping and extending into space.
Dreaming of Earth’s Sphericity, I Would Offer My Love was created in 2023.
In a second infinity room, a forest of colorful, inflated tentacles and spoken-word poetry invites wonder, whimsy and contemplation as one weaves through the curved forms.
Love Is Calling was created in 2013.
Kusama’s newest monumental sculpture takes her familiar, beloved pumpkin motif and unfurls it into an undulating form that welcomes and towers over the viewer.
Aspiring to Pumpkin’s Love, the Love in My Heart was created in 2023.
I experienced the exhibition last week at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and came away uplifted, inspired and encouraged by the longevity of Kusama’s creative spirit.
Thanks to SFMOMA and Yayoi Kusama for this dose of inspiration!
